Subshrubs; deciduous; richly branched; to 3 m tall; leaves; petioles; and bracts (sometimes bracteoles and calyx lobes) often sparsely red-brown glandular ciliolate. Young branches gray-brown or tinged with red-purple; with straight minute coarse hairs or glabrous; sometimes mixed with minute glandular hairs; old branches erect or prostrate; gray-brown or gray-black; winter buds with several pairs of acute scales. Petiole 1?2 mm; glabrous or very rarely with minute coarse hairs; leaf blade highly variable in shape; those of short branches often obovate to obovate-oblong or oblanceolate; sometimes oblong to broadly elliptic or ovate; 0.5?2 cm ? 3?8 mm; papery or thickly so; glabrous; very rarely with scattered short coarse hairs abaxially or only on midvein; often with very small rusty punctuate dots abaxially on old leaves; base cuneate; apex obtuse to rounded and often mucronate or cuspidate. Peduncles axillary on lateral short branches; 1?15 mm; glabrous or minutely coarse hairy; bracts leaflike; often exceeding calyx lobes in length; bracteoles cupular; ca. 1/2 as long as or equaling calyx tube; apex truncate or shallowly dentate; sometimes 2-lobed. Neighboring 2 calyx tubes united above middle or throughout; limb shallowly cupular; lobes triangular or ovate-triangular; often unequal; apex obtuse or sometimes slightly acute. Corolla white; purplish; or purple-red; tubular-campanulate; 6?8 mm; outside glabrous; tube inside puberulous; more densely hairy on throat; lobes orbicular-ovate or suborbicular; 1/4 or 1/2 as long as tube.
