Shrubs; deciduous; to 3(?4) m tall. Branches often glabrous or with dispersed red glands; winter buds with ca. 5 pairs of outer scales; apex acute; inner scales enlarged and reflexed. Petiole 3?6(?8) mm; leaf blade ovate-elliptic to ovate-lanceolate; 4?9(?18) ? 2?8 cm; papery; ciliate; with dense or sparse stiff hairs and sparse glands; base rounded or slightly cordate or broadly cuneate; margin often irregularly undulate or crenulate; apex acuminate or long acuminate. Peduncle 2.5?5(?9) cm; bracts linear; (1?)2?5 mm; bracteoles separate; ovate to oblong; very small; less than 1 mm. Neighboring 2 calyx tubes separate; glabrous or glandular hairy; lobes small; apex obtuse; undulate; or acute. Corolla purple-red; very rarely white or turning from white to yellow; 1?1.5 cm; bilabiate; outside sparsely pubescent and glandular hairy or glabrous; tube very short; base slender; shallowly gibbous; abruptly enlarged upward; upper labium erect; crenate; lower labium ca. 1/3 longer than upper labium; curved.
