Plants usually medium-sized. Leaf blade ??; 8--15 X 1.5--2.5 cm; margin shallowly to moderately pinnatifid; lateral lobes 3 or 4 on each side; usually ca. 1 X 1 cm at base; margin distally minutely dentate; terminal lobe usually 1.5--3 cm; usually broader than others; apex obtuse to rounded. Scapes brownish arachnoid. Involucre 1.1--1.4 cm in diam.; base rounded; outer bracts usually 16--18; dark green and suffused red turning black when dry; ± lanceolate; (5.5--)6.5--7.5 X (2--)2.5--3 mm; appressed to erect; not imbricate; margin not paler than body; apex callused to corniculate; inner bracts dark green; usually 1.2--1.4 cm; margin often reddish; flat to apically corniculate. Ligules yellow with a greenish gray stripe. Stigmas dark when dry. Achene dark red to pale yellowish brown; body 4.5--5 mm; apical part ± densely spiculate; apex gradually narrowing into a conic 1.2--1.4 mm cone; beak ca. 6 mm; usually stout. Pappus yellowish; 6--6.5 mm. Fl. and fr. ??. 2n = 32.
