Shrubs or trees; 1--6 m tall; branchlets very shortly soft hairy. Petioles 5--15 mm long; pubescent; leaf blade oblong-obovate or lanceolate; 6--26 x 1.5--7 cm; papery; apex acuminate or shortly acuminate; base cuneate; blackish brown when dry; adaxially glabrous; abaxially sparsely subpapillous pubescent or subglabrous; usually scabrous; denser and longer along veins; lateral veins 4--7 pairs; arcuate ascending; scattered/remote; slender; slightly distinct abaxially; stipules triangular; 4--5 mm long; acuminate. Cymes terminal; corymbous; 4--7 x ca. 6 cm; many-flowered; appressed gray pubescent. Pedicels 4--7 mm long; pubescent. Calyx pubescent; tube cylindrical urceolate; ca. 3 mm long; apically 5-lobed; lobes oblong; ca. 10 x 2 mm; longer than or nearly as long as corolla tube; reflexed in anthesis. Stamens 5; filaments ca. 1 mm long; anthers linear; usually convolute; ca. 8 mm long. Style ca. 2 cm long; exserted; glabrous at upper part; soft hairy at lower part. Ovary with 2 paratactic ovules per cell. Fruit subglobose; 5--7 mm in diameter; glabrous; pedicels ca. 5 mm long. Seeds 4. Fl. May--Jul; fr. Jul--Jan.

Forests on hills; 140--800 m. Guangdong (Maoming); S Guangxi; Hainan.

Plants from Hainan (Lingshui) with leaf blade elliptic or ovate-elliptic; 5--8 x 3--6 cm; and fruiting in December have been called Tarenna tsangii Merr. f. elliptica Chun et How ap. Ko.( Fl. Hainanica. 3: 584. 319. 1974).
