As the species assemblage suggests, these steppes represent a transitional type between the Pontic and the trans-Volgian-Kazakh desert steppes. In addition to species generally distributed in Pontic and Kazakh desert steppes (e.g. Stipa lessingiana, Festuca valesiaca, Aster tarbagatensis), other species prevailing here include: Stipa sareptana, Agropyron desertorum, Artemisia lerchiana, Artemisia pauciflora etc. Typically Pontic species also play an important phytocoenotic role (e.g. Artemisia taurica). In the whole area, particularly on watersheds, the formation of a vegetation complex is characteristic.

Vegetation of ravines: in the north tree stands (Ulmus laevis, Crataegus monogyna, Rhamnus cathartica, Prunus spinosa) and in the Čapurnikovskaja gorge pedunculate oak forests (Quercus robur) with Ulmus laevis, Acer tataricum, Euonymus verrucosa amongst others. In the central and southern part only shrub stands (Rhamnus cathartica, Spiraea hypericifolia, Calophaca wolgarica, Prunus tenella) remain preserved.

Jergeni Hills: undulating plains with steep eastern slopes, cut by many ravines and shallow streams, and very gentle western slopes; the upper part of the main ridge is characterised by plateaux and moderately inclined slopes with many limanes and hollows.

The area is used for pasturing and sometimes as arable land. Where heavy grazing has occurred, tussock grass steppes have been replaced by mugwort communities (Artemisia lerchiana, Artemisia taurica) with Leymus ramosus. Limans have been transformed into arable land.

Within the range of this mapping unit, nature reserves are lacking. The tree shrub vegetation of the ravines which harbours many rare species (e.g. the east Pontic-trans-Volgian species Calophaca wolgarica) is particularly invaluable.
